Norfolk Sheriff’s Office – Reducing Accreditation Costs and Improving Accountability
By Norfolk Sheriff’s Office
Published: 01/26/2010

Lincoln, NE – As part of the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC) requirements, standard ADM.09.02 requires all Norfolk Sheriff’s Office (NSO) employees to review and acknowledge new and revised policies and procedures. With nearly 150 organizational procedures, NSO realized that outdated and expensive manual efforts needed to be modernized and replaced immediately to keep up with escalating challenges and obligations. NSO implemented Awareity’s award‐winning MOAT (Managed Ongoing Awareness & Trust) e‐Management tools to reduce costs and to accurately and efficiently implement, communicate, track and document employee awareness and accountability of directives, roles, procedures and plans.

MOAT’s revolutionary e‐Management and e‐Compliance tools allow managers to easily oversee multiple departments and obligations including:
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Employment and Human Resources
  • Risk Management
  • Legal Due Diligence
  • Information Security and Handling
  • Pandemic Flu
  • And much more…

With MOAT, customized training and individual certifications are tracked and documented so the NSO Standards and Compliance Division now has access to on‐demand progress reporting and preparedness metrics, as well as much needed documentation for regulatory audits, examinations and accreditations like CALEA.

Cutting Costs

Like other law enforcement agencies, NSO is experiencing budget cuts and is working hard to reduce costs and leverage limited resources. By implementing MOAT, NSO is significantly reducing administrative, operations and printing costs, as well as expensive training and overtime costs immediately and ongoing.

MOAT is easy to use and web‐based – requiring NO software and NO hardware installation. MOAT delivers real‐ time accessibility from anywhere Internet access is available ‐ at work, home, traveling, and even during emergency situations when clarity and situational awareness is most critical. MOAT gives NSO’s Administration the ability to accurately and efficiently provide situational awareness and eliminate confusion while building trust, ensuring accountability and saving time, money and valuable resources.
