A Bradford County deputy watching for burned-out vehicle lights picked up a state correctional officer on a crack cocaine charge and in another stop seized a half pound of marijuana.

Sgt. Tommy Sapp was patrolling in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood near Starke late Friday when he noticed a 2001 Hyundai hatchback pull up outside a known drug house, according to sheriff's Capt. Brad Smith. Someone from inside the house ran out to the car, appeared to speak briefly to the driver and then ran back inside.

Sapp said that he noticed that both tail lights were out on the Hyundai and pulled the car over.

The driver was identified as John Skinner, 45, of Starke. Inside the car deputies recovered about $30 worth of crack cocaine, Smith said, and the officers heard Skinner admit he had a drug problem. He was charged with possession of crack cocaine.

Skinner has worked for the Florida Department of Corrections for 13 years and was most recently assigned to Union Correctional Institution.

A Department of Corrections official said Monday that a letter of dismissal was being drafted.
