| Orange County Jails May House Federal Detainees |

SANTA ANA, Calif.—Orange County's sheriff is trying to keep her jails open by using them to house federal detainees. Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has won approval to negotiate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to house more than 800 immigration detainees while their deportation cases are being heard. The county would receive $40 million a year. With the Sheriff's Department facing a $65-million budget gap next year, Hutchens says the money would help her avoid jail cutbacks and deputy layoffs.
