How important is the deputy union endorsement for sheriff? It should not be that important to county voters because the interests of deputies (wages and benefits) are different from those of voters (taxes paid and services received). Voters want the best value for their dollar, in a time of ever-shrinking county revenues. However, all three sheriff candidates appear unwilling to boldly address two obvious and reasonable solutions. First, county employees should take a pay cut (2.5 percent for those earning under $50K yearly). Second, correctional officers should replace higher-paid deputies in staffing the county jail.
