|Iowa Escapee Recaptured|
Law officers fired tear gas into a Des Moines residence Monday afternoon and arrested an escaped inmate after a standoff between him and authorities that lasted about seven hours.
Donald Charles Fessler, 42, is seven years into a 10-year sentence tied to several armed robberies in the Des Moines area. He had been wanted since walking away from a Des Moines work release facility Nov. 30.
A warrant team of two parole and probation officers, a U.S. marshal and two Des Moines police officers went to 1327 24th St. about 9:15 a.m. to arrest Fessler for failing to return to the work release center and for a parole violation. Officers soon backed away and called for negotiators.
Fred Scaletta of the Iowa Department of Corrections said a friend of Fessler's who lives in the building answered the door. The friend and other residents of the building and two neighboring properties were evacuated as specialists took over.
