For about 11 years, Jeffrey Warren has worked with people convicted and sentenced to serve time.

Now the York County Prison corrections officer wants to translate his knowledge of the legal system into a district judge position.

Warren, of Dover, announced he is running for the seat now held by Gerald Shoemaker, which covers Jackson, Dover and Paradise townships and the boroughs of Dover and Spring Grove.

Shoemaker is retiring; Stanley Snyder, Rick Magee, Dave Eshbach and Angela Fox have also announced their plans to run for the seat.

All five candidates are cross-filed, meaning their names will appear on both the Republican and Democratic ballots.

Warren, who has lived in Dover for the past 25 years, joined the Marine Corps. after graduating from high school in 1984. He was a member of the reserves for six years.

"It's something to be really proud of when you make it through basic training," he said. "I wanted to serve my country and be part of an elite group, so to speak."

Warren worked construction and pest control jobs before he took a job with the York County Prison, where he has worked for the past 11 years.

In his time with the prison, Warren said, he has gained skills that give him an advantage for the district judge post. Warren has built relationships with constables and understands how to process court orders and bench warrants.
