Georgetown, Deleware — A leader in the Republican Party has called on a federal attorney to investigate mismanagement in the Delaware Department of Corrections. Officials say the Sussex Work Release Center is unable to produce any documents related to its inmate day labor program. John Sigler, chairman of Delaware Republican Committee sent a July 9 letter to U.S. Attorney Charles Oberly asking him to launch an investigation of the Sussex Work Release Center in Georgetown. Sigler said he discovered through news reports that the center kept no records of program participants, the hours participants worked, compensation for the workers or taxes reported in the 23-year history of the program. “The absence of any records is troubling and suggests they may not have been kept for a reason,” Sigler wrote. The issue stems from a Feb. 20 tire-burning incident involving Rep. John Atkins, D-Millsboro. Atkins said his father-in-law and two workers, hired through Sussex Work Release Center in Georgetown, were on the property when the tires were thrown in the fire. John Painter, chief of media relations for Delaware Department of Corrections said in response to media requests, the DOC was forced to reveal it had no record of program participants or where they worked. Painter said Corrections Commissioner Carl Danberg stopped the day-labor program to investigate the lack of documentation. “It appears documentation was kept, but it was kept for a short period of time,” he said.
