Authorities are searching for a man who escaped from an Oklahoma prison Sunday. Stephen Barbee escaped from the Northeast Oklahoma Correctional Center in Vinita. Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massey says Barbee likely walked away from the minimum-security facility, which has dorm-style housing. Barbee wasn't present at the 8:30 p.m. check, said Massey. Craig County Sheriff Jimmie Sooter said Monday he believes Barbee may have stolen a truck less than two miles from the facility. Edwin Greschke, the vehicle's owner, discovered his truck had gone missing around 7:30 p.m., roughly one hour before correctional officers learned of Barbee's disappearance. "I thought it was one of my friends playing a practical joke on me, and I called them and I come to find out it wasn't them," Greschke said. "So I called the sheriff right away." Officials with the Vinita prison haven't linked the inmate to the stolen vehicle, with warden's assistant Heather Harrison declining to speculate on how he might have gotten away at this point in the investigation. Barbee, 25, is described as Native American, 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes and various tattoos. Read More. |
