Information regarding Illinois Department of Corrections staff volunteers and inmate-work
volunteers engaged in tornado relief in Illinois:
- IDOC efforts now in their second week. Over 525 man-hours thus far
- 10 inmate work crews assembled with complete security screening of each inmate for
outside-work qualification, following an inmate’s volunteering for tornado relief work
- 61 offenders and 25 staff from Pontiac Correctional Center, Decatur CC and Dixon
Springs
- Governor Pat Quinn shook the hand of each staff member and inmate and thanked
them
- Numerous staff took personal time off to work as volunteers in tornado relief
- Work done in communities of Gifford, IL (photos attached to email) and Brookport, IL
- On 11/25/13, IDOC also delivered two box trucks of water and Illinois Correctional
Industries (ICI) delivered a semi-trailer of disaster supplies, all to Brookport. The supplies
were collected and retrieved from a location in Chicago for delivery downstate.
Governor Quinn’s thanks were extended as these trucks were unloaded.
- The State of Illinois Central Management Services (CMS) purchased hundreds of pairs of
tube socks and hundreds of stocking caps from ICI. ICI pays inmates who manufacture
goods and provide services, and all socks and caps were made by inmates. These items
were sent to Brookport for use by those performing relief work.
- Additional requests for IDOC assistance are expected during this and next week,
particularly after heavy machinery operators have cleared the biggest pieces of debris
- Two Pontiac Correctional Center employees lost their homes as a result of the tornado
that hit Washington. Pontiac staff came together over a three-day period and collected
$1,632 for the affected employees. This money was given to those employees last
Friday. Staff are continuing the collection.
