House approves sweeping crime reform bill |

JUNEAU — After much hand wringing and gnashing of teeth, the House approved a sweeping crime and corrections reform bill created by the Senate and carried by North Pole Sen. John Coghill. Nearly an hour and a half past midnight and the planned end of the 28th Alaska Legislature, the House unanimously passed Senate Bill 64. The bill, which received broad support in the Senate, aims to address Alaska’s growing and increasingly costly prison population. The bill introduces several measures that aim to keep low-level offenders out of expensive and limited prison beds and the recently released from committing new crimes. It also updates the state’s felony theft level and creates a task force to review criminal sentencing guidelines. Read More. |
