Ohio prison growth ‘unfathomable’ to director

Ohio’s prison director Gary Mohr sat in his West Broad Street office wearing a white button-up dress shirt and a red tie with clouds, sunshine and words like dreams, hope, family and friends.

A quilt hung on one wall, a gift from the inmates at the state’s first reintegration center, joining a framed quote from Robert F. Kennedy proclaiming the future belongs to those who “blend passion, reason and courage in a personal commitment to the ideals of American society.”

As he reflected on his start in corrections as a teacher’s aide, 40 years ago as of July 1, the 61-year-old Prospect native and Elgin High School graduate paused and held his lips tight. His mother died of a brain tumor when he was 16 and his relationship with his father was strained at best.
