Prison guards argue to save watch towers

OKLAHOMA CITY — A leader of the state’s correctional officers says closing watch towers at six prisons will add to the flow of contraband while heightening safety risks for employees and inmates.

Armed officers stationed in the towers keep “preventative” watch over the perimeters and yards of some of the state’s oldest prisons, said Sean Wallace, the executive director of the Oklahoma Corrections Professionals.

Despite that crucial role, Wallace said, wardens at six prisons have been asked about the feasibility of closing their towers.
