Probe early releases, but don’t forget prison reforms |

I don’t know 40-year-old Kena Jackson of Beatrice, one of the countless numbers of formerly incarcerated persons who were rounded up and sent back to prison amid allegations that somebody in the Department of Corrections screwed up. There has been plenty of finger pointing, promises from Gov. Dave Heineman that heads will roll, a criminal investigation and questioning of the former head of corrections by a legislative panel. The public has been swamped with a myriad of numbers about how many inmates were erroneously released following the incorrect calculation of sentences. Other numbers about how many have been arrested and how many incorrect early releases were avoided are also out there. A couple of Omaha World-Herald reporters discovered the mess. It appears, from what we have heard, that a Supreme Court ruling on re-calculating sentences was ignored. It also appears that the then head of the Department of Corrections didn’t know anything about the situation. Neither did the governor nor attorney general. It also appears that the people who did know have either suddenly retired, been amazingly mum or have just simply gone off the grid. Read More. |
