Erie prison psych unit expansion sought |

Erie County is weighing a local solution to the admissions backlog at the state psychiatric hospital that treats mentally ill individuals facing criminal charges. Representatives of Erie County courts, human services and the prison met with state officials in a closed-door session Monday to address a series of concerns that had arisen about the care of mentally ill criminal defendants from Erie County. At issue were both a delay in obtaining mental competency evaluations for mentally ill criminal defendants and also a delay in admissions to Torrance State Hospital. That is where severely mentally ill Erie County defendants are court-ordered for psychiatric treatment -- either to restore their mental competency for trial or because they are a danger to themselves or others under what is known as a 304-court order. Erie County officials who attended Monday's meeting said one thing was clear: No new beds will be added to the existing 100 beds at Torrance, which serves 48 western Pennsylvania counties, including Erie.
