Backup power at state prisons becomes an issue |

SPRINGFIELD — A prison power outage in August has put a spotlight on whether state correctional facilities are fully prepared to deal with emergencies. Illinois Department of Corrections leaders are still investigating a 92-minute, storm-caused blackout at the minimum-security Vandalia Correctional Center on Aug. 20. During the outage, an inmate attacked a guard after other prisoners began getting "rowdy." The events are similar to two other prison outages in other parts of the state. In January, inmates got unruly after power went out at Vienna Correctional Center, leaving some without heat or light during one of the coldest winters in memory. Read More. |
