Tim Robbins' Actors' Gang comes to OZ — and to prison

"It's probably a different approach to Shakespeare than what you've seen," says actress Sabra Williams, describing The Actors' Gang's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which opens OZ's second season this weekend. Williams has been performing with the Los Angeles-based theatrical troupe, formed in 1981 by Academy Award-winning actor Tim Robbins, for 10 years. The ensemble has at various times included actors as accomplished as Jack Black, John Cusack and Jon Favreau. Robbins directed the version of the Bard's classic comedy playing at OZ Friday and Saturday.

"We take a play, and we play with it for a while," Williams says of The Actors' Gang's rigorous but lively approach. "We have a workshop for four to five hours every Sunday night, and the whole company is invited to attend. During that time we improvise in the Commedia dell'arte style of theater."

Commedia dell'arte is a classic form of improv, and Williams, a London-born actress who comes from a theatrical family (her mother was a director and her dad's a playwright), explains that its success largely depends on the cohesion of the actors involved.
