Eight inmates have died this year at Tomoka Correctional Institution near Daytona Beach — the most when compared to other prisons without a hospital or large medical facility, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

One of Tomoka’s deaths remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement while another inmate died after suffering multiple lower body injuries when he fell 4½ feet to the floor from his upper bunk.

The eight deaths at Tomoka, which can house up to 1,386 inmates, is one more than Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, which has a much larger capacity at up to 2,604. Forty-seven inmates have died at Tomoka since 2000 with the previous single-year high of six in 2012, according to the prison system.
