Pierre, SD (KELO-AM) Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that a criminal investigation is underway into the death of South Dakota State Penitentiary inmate Kent Davidson. His death has been ruled a homicide.

Davidson, 37, was found dead in his cell at the state prison in Sioux Falls on September 8th. His death certificate released Monday stated the cause of death was asphyxia and strangulation by homicide. It appears he was strangled with a bedsheet.

Davidson was serving life for the murder of his former fiancee Crystal Schultz in Chamberlain.

Jakcley says the circumstances surrounding the death do not present a further danger to the public, correction officers or other inmates. He says it's important to thoroughly review all the facts before any charging decisions are made.
