Better local services linked to jail mental health issues |

BLOOMINGTON — Citing the strong link between the number of mentally ill people in jail and community services available for them, McLean County Sheriff Mike Emery on Monday applauded recent efforts to boost behavioral health care in McLean County. "The longer we can keep people with mental illness out of jail, the healthier they will get and the less likely they are to come back to jail," the sheriff told an audience at the McLean County Republican Party luncheon at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bloomington. The recent award of a $700,000 federal grant to Chestnut Health Systems for its planned crisis stabilization center, combined with Chestnut's partnership with McLean County to build a new Family Health Center and the expanded crisis team at the Center for Human Services are signs that things are improving, said Emery.
