Current Hutchinson prison employees speaks out about staffing issues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- New details have been released about the stabbing that happened yesterday at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. According to the Kansas Organization of State Employees (KOSE) the officer was stabbed 13 times with a 6-8 inch piece of plexi-glass. That inmate had been housed at the Lansing Correctional Facility and had been involved in other attacks just this summer. The inmate was transferred to the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

In an I-Team Investigation we tracked down a current employee who says there is a serious staffing issue at the Hutch prison. He believes Wednesday's stabbing could have been prevented if there was an adequate number of staff.

The Hutchinson Correctional Facility may look in order. But one Hutch prison employee, who didn't want his name released, says there's a number of problems. One of the biggest problems is the staffing issue.

He said, "you're talking about an officer watching about 200 inmates at one time and we are talking about the worst of the worst inmates....no one man or woman should or human being should be responsible for 150 people and especially the kind of evil we take care of."
