Arkansas prison officials restrict inmates from jobs in schools while children present

ENGLAND, Arkansas — Arkansas prison officials have set new restrictions for inmates working at schools after a man who tortured and killed a teen in 1974 installed gym equipment at a junior high.

The Department of Correction changed its policy Wednesday, saying state prison inmates working for Arkansas Correctional Industries must seek approval from school and prison officials before working when children are present.

The change comes after reports from a Pulaski County newspaper about the work crew at the school prompted a public outcry, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.
