Elmira prison put on lockdown after stabbings

The Elmira Correctional Facility was placed on lockdown Friday afternoon, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Acting Commissioner Anthony J. Annucci ordered a lockdown of the prison after a number of homemade weapons were found following Wednesday’s assault on correction officers.

Inmate Darius Ashley, 38, formerly of the Albany area, is suspected of stabbing two officers Wednesday during a cell search. One officer was stabbed seven times in the upper body with a nail-type weapon and was hospitalized at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. A second officer received puncture wounds. Two other officers were also injured.
