New Mexico prisons on lockdown in contraband hunt |

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — In an unannounced move, New Mexico Corrections Department Secretary Gregg Marcantel ordered a lockdown of the state's 11 prisons on Monday as part of a massive hunt for contraband among inmates. The department said staff members would search every inmate and housing unit for illegal items and review the conditions of buildings. The lockdown was part of periodic reviews aimed at safety and reducing recidivism rates, Marcantel said. "The real secret for succeeding in these unforgiving prison environments is deliberate and intentional preparation," Marcantel said in a statement.
