Corrections Officers: Budget Cuts May Compromise Prison Safety

In the midst of some big budget cuts, prisons across the commonwealth are gearing for big changes. The Virginia Department of Corrections has to shed workers and move inmates around with a much smaller budget.

On Wednesday, NBC29 joined several state leaders as they toured the Coffeewood Correctional Center in Culpeper County to see first-hand how budget cuts may impact facilities all across the state.

Conditions inside Coffeewood may surprise you - as many as 160 inmates occupy one dormitory, and sometimes with just one correctional officer to watch over them.
