Bristol Virginia City Council to vote on regional jail proposal |

BRISTOL, Va. — City leaders will weigh a proposal to join the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail system and hold a public hearing to modify its city charter during tonight’s meeting of the Bristol Virginia City Council. The agenda includes a contract to join the regional jail authority. Last month, city leaders directed staff to negotiate a deal and return for consideration. If ultimately approved, it could mean closing the city jail, sending city prisoners to other regional facilities and idling more than 30 current deputies. “We have a service agreement that we will present for the council’s consideration,” City Manager Tabitha Crowder said Monday. “The numbers are in line with what was presented earlier in terms of the cost of the regional jail.
