Tallahassee Needs to Fix Broken Prisons |

Mike Crews, the embattled secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections, resigned this week, two years after inheriting a prison system plagued with widespread abuse and mismanagement. Part of the problem at the DOC is a lack of continuity, with six secretaries in eight years. A department with 20,000 employees is bound to have a few bad apples who have little fear of a secretary who's bound to be gone in short order. Earlier this year suspicious deaths were reported in several state prisons. At Dade Correctional Institution, a mentally ill inmate was scalded to death by guards who thought prolonged exposure to excruciatingly hot water was fitting punishment.
