Victim, suspect in prison death were near end of segregation

PONTIAC — A Pontiac prison inmate who was killed this week in his cell and the inmate suspected in the homicide were set to leave the segregation unit in less than three weeks, the state Department of Corrections said Thursday.

The suspect, who remained unidentified on Thursday, was scheduled to leave the segregation unit on Dec. 27. The victim, Fabian Carrillo, 36, who was killed by as-yet-undisclosed means, was set to be released on Jan. 2, said IDOC.

Both men were in one of the prison's 171 double-inmate cells when Carrillo was killed. The unit also has 389 single-inmate cells.
