| Work underway on new Putnam County jail |

Construction is underway to replace a poorly designed, crumbling Putnam County jail built in 1987 that has been blamed in part for a 2009 escape that led to murder. The jail has been a persistent headache for the Sheriff’s Office and will be closed when its $18.5 million replacement is completed in about a year. Two pods with a total of 448 beds are being built using prefabricated, modular, steel cells in a two-story structure on land adjacent to the current jail. Each pod will have eight blocks containing cells for one and two inmates, said Maj. John Griffin, the jail director.
