Construction is underway to replace a poorly designed, crumbling Putnam County jail built in 1987 that has been blamed in part for a 2009 escape that led to murder.

The jail has been a persistent headache for the Sheriff’s Office and will be closed when its $18.5 million replacement is completed in about a year.

Two pods with a total of 448 beds are being built using prefabricated, modular, steel cells in a two-story structure on land adjacent to the current jail. Each pod will have eight blocks containing cells for one and two inmates, said Maj. John Griffin, the jail director. From above, the cellblocks will resemble a wagon wheel, with a monitoring platform at the hub where corrections officers will have total view of inmates, cells and common areas.
