Architect: Fixing current jail would cost $14 million

STEVENS POINT — A study released this week determined that taxpayers will pay at least $14 million on the Portage County Jail just to meet state standards. More expensive options would create a new, larger jail to meet long-term needs. The county's jail is so crowded that taxpayers pay about $500,000 a year to transport and house Portage County inmates in Waupaca County, officials say. In addition, it's not built to separate inmates according to today's corrections codes. Venture Architects, a Milwaukee-based firm hired to study the county's jail needs, has recommend three options:
