MDOC to reopen Hiawatha Correctional Facility

Saying the Michigan Department of Corrections has “a mission to protect the public and to carry out that mission in an economic way,” said Lloyd Repelje, Assistant Deputy Director for the Kinross Office, as he detailed future plans for those in attendance at a special Chippewa County informational meeting on Friday.

“It’s not a pressure thing,” said Rapelje. “We’re doing it strictly because it makes sense.”

In crunching all the numbers, MDOC officials have come up with a plan to reopen the Hiawatha Correctional Facility, which closed in 2009, while deactivating the Kinross Correctional Facility (KCF).

KCF, a former barracks, was not designed to house prisoners, according to Rapelje’s report, and would be costly to update.
