Laid-off prison guards face tough choices |

RAYMONDVILLE — Emiliano Marceleno said Tuesday that it will be tough finding work around here that pays as well as his old job at the tent-city prison that laid off about 363 employees about three weeks ago. Marceleno joined 15 laid-off prison employees at a job fair in this area that has long suffered one of Texas’ highest unemployment rates. Marceleno said his job as a prison guard at the Willacy County Correctional Center paid $14.94 an hour — twice as much as his previous job as a gin field worker. “For me, that’s pretty good,” Marceleno said of the job he held for about four months. “It was a really good job. It’s real hard to find that good of pay. It’s a small (area here) and everybody’s applying at the same time.” Read More. |
