GUNNISON-- A groundbreaking ceremony was held March 23 to begin the $30 million expansion project that will add 192 additional beds and employ another 76 personnel at Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF). Sanpete County Commission Chair Claudia Jarrett said the expansion will be beneficial to the county in revenue from various sources. Utah State Senator Daniel Thatcher, West Valley City said even with plans to relocate the state prison in Draper, the expansion at CUCF is necessary to keep up with current incarceration rates. Thatcher said had the Utah State Legislature not funded the expansion project, the Utah Department of Corrections would have had to do an emergency release of inmates. Read More. |
