SC Prisons Working to Change Mental Health Behind Bars |

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - More than 20,000 people are currently incarcerated in the South Carolina prison system. Of those, more than 3000 have been diagnosed with some sort of mental illness. How to deal with those inmates has been an issue for years. For the past 15 months, corrections leaders have stepped up efforts to better treat those prisoners. A new director was left to clean up years of abuse, but Bryan Stirling accepted the challenge, and has been making changes behind bars for the better. "When I first came I was new to corrections and I went around and visited every institution," He said. "I talked to the inmates but I also talked to the staff to try and figure out what motivated them to work at the department of corrections. It's a high stress job." Read More. |
