Vt. Senate Plan Keeps Prison Open |

Montpelier — The Senate Appropriations Committee has scrapped plans to shutter Southeast State Correctional Facility. The committee removed language from the budget bill, H.490, that would have initiated a two-year plan to close the Windsor facility, but the committee kept language calling for the Department of Corrections to transition 100 inmates out of prison. Sen. Dick Sears, D-Bennington, said that the programs at the Windsor facility make it a unique part of the state’s correctional system. The prison, which houses 100 offenders, hosts a work camp program and Salvation Farms, an agricultural program for inmates. Windsor town manager Tom Marsh said last month that work crews from the prison help with maintenance projects around the town. Read More. |
