Senators Vote to Abolish Nebraska's Death Penalty |

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senators voted Wednesday to get rid of the death penalty in Nebraska. Gov. Pete Ricketts said Wednesday he will veto the bill because he feels not having the death penalty threatens public safety. But, with 32 votes in favor of the measure, senators could override his veto. Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers has been working to eliminate the death penalty for 40 years. He joked Wednesday he could die now that he's accomplished this goal. Another supporter, Lincoln Sen. Colby Coash said a number of influences brought people to vote for the bill. He said for some senators it was the desire for more efficiency in Neb.'s government. For others, he said, pro-life faith influences. Another reason he cited is input from some victim families that the death penalty prolongs their struggle. Read More. |
