Minor offenders soon to get a second chance

THE Department of Correctional Services is considering an amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act to allow for the removal of criminal records for minor offenders in order to give them "a second chance in life".

Currently, records are expunged only after 10 years. But Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha said on Wednesday this could be a lifetime for young people who lost many opportunities because of their criminal records.

"In numerous interactions with former offenders who have remained law-abiding citizens for years, the matter of criminal records and their detrimental effect on successful social reintegration has consistently been raised," said Mr Masutha ahead of his budget vote speech.

This barrier to building a new life undermined the government’s emphasis on the rehabilitation of prisoners.
