State responds to Angola prisoners' lawsuit |

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, sued Wednesday (May 20) in federal court by a dozen Angola prisoners who claim they receive insufficient medical care, responded Thursday (May 21), saying it "fulfills its constitutional obligation" of providing health care to state prisoners. The corrections department said all of the state's correctional facilities -– including the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola –- are nationally accredited by the American Correctional Association and meet national standards. Those include "very specific healthcare standards." In their lawsuit, prisoners said they are not provided medically necessary treatments, and that access to specialty care is routinely delayed.
