Milwaukee County lands grant aimed at reducing incarceration disparities |

Milwaukee County has won a $150,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as part of the organization's $75 million initiative to reduce racial and economic disparities within the country's jail systems. Milwaukee County was one of 20 jurisdictions chosen for the grant, which will fund a six-month planning period to create a pilot project or other strategy to help ensure detention decisions are based on a person's risk to the community and their needs, while also being race, gender and economic status neutral. The Milwaukee Community Justice Council will play a lead role in coordinating the efforts. "In Wisconsin, and specifically Milwaukee, it's a situation where there is a real disconnect between the demographics of our population and demographics of the people we're incarcerating," Milwaukee County Chief Judge Jeffrey Kremers said.
