New Tenn. law requires mandatory jail time before probation for vehicular homicide |

Sentences for anyone convicted of vehicular homicide or vehicular assault just got tougher with a new law that will require jail time before they can get probation, and their release eligibility just doubled. “A vehicular homicide is a B or C felony, depending on circumstances, and it’s a 30 percent offense,” said District Attorney General Tony Clark. That “30 percent” means the person convicted must serve at least 30 percent of their sentence before becoming eligible for parole. The Department of Corrections can also further reduce that 30 percent by awarding good behavior credits — up to 15 percent of the sentence — to inmates.
