Ban on college grants for federal, state prisoners could be lifted, Michigan repeat violators rate down

WASHINGTON -- Michigan prisoners could soon have more access to higher education.

Speculation is swirling that President Barack Obama is working to end a ban on college grants for state and federal inmates.

This comes after Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced they will visit the Maryland Correctional Institution in Jessup, Maryland Friday. Duncan confirmed an "important announcement" will be made according the Associated Press. The prison has a partnership with nearby Goucher College.

According to the Department of Corrections, the US prison population cost about $80 billion a year to sustain.

It's been nearly twenty-years since college Pell grants which are for low-income students were banned for prisoners.
