VERONA—Women incarcerated at Middle River Regional Jail are asking the Department of Corrections to address complaints about conditions at the jail, according to a copy of a letter received by The News Leader. The letter addressed to the DOC and dated July 5 was signed by 20 women housed in an open MRRJ dormitory. It describes conditions at the county-run jail ranging from an inmate with lupus and cancer being given only Ibuprofen, to depriving the women of adequate sanitary napkins and showers. "For females to initiate this correspondence, it is meaningful," Nancy Insco, who co-leads a re-entry program at MRRJ and Rockingham Regional Jail, wrote in an e-mail. "Women will tolerate higher dysfunction than their male counterparts. We have heard repeated, similar complaints." The News Leader received a copy of the handwritten letter from Mennonite pastor and counselor Harvey Yoder of Harrisonburg. Yoder began counseling one of the signers, Shannon Smith, when she was incarcerated in Rockingham, and continued visiting her when she was transferred to MRRJ. Read More. |
