| Hampden County sheriff candidate Nick Cocchi says alcohol correctional facility should stay in Springfield |

SPRINGFIELD — As the debate continues over where to site the new Western Massachusetts Alcohol Correctional Center, Hampden County sheriff candidate Nick Cocchi says the facility should be located in the region's largest city. "It's got to be in the city of Springfield," said Cocchi, chief of security at the Hampden County Sheriff's Department and one of three declared candidates vying to succeed longtime Sheriff Mike Ashe. Cocchi has stepped into the fray over a proposal to build a new correctional facility in Springfield's North End, where residents opposed to the idea are suing to stop the plan supported by Ashe and the state Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM). The proposal calls for creating a new facility on Wason Avenue in the Brightwood section of the North End, but residents say the location isn't the right fit for the residential neighborhood.
