The average cost of a meal served in state prisons is $1.12. How many burgers, loaves of bread, and pounds of peanut butter does the prison system go through in a year's time to feed inmates and staff? According to the state Department of Corrections, approximately 2.8 million burgers, 2.3 loaves of bread, and 327,064 pounds of peanut butter. How does Pennsylvania's state prison grocery bill compare to other states? Pennsylvania spent $61.8 million on food to feed 51,000 inmates (and staff). Illinois spent $58.6 million to feed 48,900 inmates. New York spent $51.7 million to feed 52,600 inmates. Maryland spent $38.1 million to feed 24,400 inmates.
