Grand jury reports on correctional facilities

CENTREVILLE — A Queen Anne’s County Grand Jury report on correctional facilities in the county has given those facilities good marks and recommended some tweaking to improve operations.

On Aug. 31 the April 2015 term of the Grand Jury visited and inspected the Maryland Department of Corrections’ Eastern Pre-Release Unit near Church Hill and the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center in Centreville. Such visits are required periodically under the Annotated Code of the State of Maryland.

In its report to Queen Anne’s County Circuit Court Judge Thomas G. Ross, the grand jury described the Eastern Pre-Release Unit, built in 1964, as “clean and the grounds are well maintained.” It also stated the work programs for inmates “appear to be excellent although staffing can be an issue,” noting that many staffers perform dual functions. It has an inmate capacity of 180, and the grand jury said there were 168 at the time of its visit.
