CMF one of four prisons providing inmates with condoms

California state prison inmates are receiving free condoms inside the institution, and the California Medical Facility (CMF) in Vacaville has been one of the first to implement the program.

The state’s goal is to improve the health and welfare of all involved in California correctional institutions and to reduce health risks, but correctional officers argue it poses more risks.

Approximately 21,000 condoms have been distributed between July 24 and Sept. 4, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), 5,000 of which have been distributed at CMF.

The program was implemented under Assembly Bill 966, the Prisoner Protections for Family and Community Health Act, which took effect on Sept. 26, 2014.

AB 966 requires to CDCR develop a five-year plan to extend the availability of condoms in all California prisons.
