| Plans made to move some female inmates from overcrowded Grants facility |

The New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility in Grants is close to having more inmates than it can handle, but the man in charge of our state's prisons says he has a plan. For years, the women's prison has worked to rehabilitate female inmates with programs like one that helps train dogs. But as the number of female inmates rises, it's tougher to provide the help that can change those women's lives. Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel says the surge is because more women are serving longer sentences and many female prisoners return to crime and end up back behind bars. "We've kind of approached how we correctionally program them - from a male gender dominated approach - because they're not the masses," Marcantel said. "But with this spike, this gives us an opportunity to really look at ourselves and ask ourselves questions - are we doing what we need to be doing? - and the answer is no." Read More. |
