Former WI DOC officer says forced OT for all is not a long-term solution, Gov. Walker agrees

WAUPUN (WKOW) -- A 13-year Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) officer believes a new plan to rotate overtime among all prison guards, regardless of seniority, won't serve as a long-term solution to filling the gap caused by roughly 500 open positions statewide.

DOC Secretary Ed Wall put the new rotation system in place earlier this month. Previously, the newest officers had to work double-shifts when no one else had volunteered for the overtime. Wall said in a memo the new system would cut down on fatigue caused by multiple days of overtime for some employees.

But Tony Gunderson, who quit his job at the Dodge Correctional Institution November 1, told 27 News the new rotation system presents a different type of danger for the guards and a greater cost to taxpayers.

"People don't understand what it takes to be a correctional officer for eight hours a day, 40 hours a week," said Gunderson. "The mental trauma that you go through, the belittling, the name-calling, the threats that come with the job."

Few know that better than Gunderson, who started as a DOC officer in 2003, only to walk away from his career due partly to the problem of forced overtime.
