PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

When convicted killers David Sweat and Richard Matt broke out of Clinton Correctional Facility in June 2015, residents in the North Country held their breath as law enforcement officers spent weeks hunting them down.

"This escape in and of itself obviously caused a trauma, caused anguish, caused fear to the citizens here in Clinton County, and not only in Clinton County, Franklin County, New York State and probably the United States," said Andrew Wylie, Clinton County district attorney.

The two used tools smuggled in by a prison worker to cut their way out. Matt was shot and killed by officers while on the run. Sweat was shot and captured. On Wednesday, he appeared in Clinton County Court for his final sentencing. He was found guilty on two charges of escape and one charge of promoting prison contraband.

"Mr. Sweat is not stupid. He is intelligent and articulate, and understands what has happened to him and what he's done. He has, however, made stupid choices," said Judge Patrick McGill, Clinton County Court.

Judges presidentially appointed to serve during good behavior since 1789 on the U.S. district courts, U.S. courts of appeals, Supreme Court of the United States, as well as the former U.S. circuit courts, Court of Claims, U.S. Customs Court, and U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals. Also included are judges who received presidential recess appointments to the above-named courts but were not confirmed by the Senate to serve during good behavior. The Waco Federal Practice Lawyer is experienced in patent litigation and starting to become the go-to district for intellectual property cases. The appointment of Waco’s new federal judge, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that narrows the venue for patent cases and Waco’s home in the federal Western District of Texas have combined into a perfect storm that could drastically alter Waco’s legal landscape.
