PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The state Department of Corrections is resuming the selection process for correctional officers that began in 2013 but was stalled by a lawsuit accusing the department of discriminating against African-Americans and Hispanics in its hiring.

In the coming weeks, applicants who took the entrance exam in 2013 will receive letters via email and mail notifying them of the tests results, and alerting them to the next steps in the process, according to a news release by J.R. Ventura, spokesman for the department.

The department halted the selection process in 2013 after learning that the U.S. Department of Justice would be filing a lawsuit alleging that the exams for the correctional officer training academy eliminated blacks and Hispanic test takers at a much greater rate than whites. The state has maintained that its entrance exams meet the requirements of the law. That case remains ongoing.

It guides his thoughts and keeps his team on task. He could function, and be trusted, in a handshake world. Hamilton’s word is his bond. He studies. He learns. He listens. He remains aware of what others are saying, writing and thinking.
