Sweeping charges filed against prison gang members |

LAS CRUCES - Thirty-nine members and associates of a powerful New Mexico prison gang have been charged with racketeering and committing violent crimes, including murder and kidnapping, in two federal indictments that were unsealed Thursday. Law enforcement officials on Thursday also served 22 arrest warrants and eight residential search warrants in connection to "Operation Atonement," which targeted the Syndicato de Nuevo Mexico, or SNM, a prison gang that was formed by inmates at Penitentiary of New Mexico after the deadly riot of 1980. Nineteen suspects were arrested in Albuquerque, Belen, Los Lunas and at several state prisons, FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said. Three remained at large as of Thursday evening. The arrests and indictments were part of the second phase of the operation, Fisher said. In December, 25 members and associates of SNM were arrested and indicted on federal charges as part of the operation’s first phase. Read More. |
